Dean Smith

Dean Edwards Smith was born in Emporia, Kansas, in 1931. He became head basketball coach of the University of North Carolina at age thirty, and in his thirty-six years in that position, he established Atlantic Coast Conference and national coaching records that may never be broken. His UNC teams had a record of 879–254, a winning percentage of 0.776. 879 victories are the most by any coach in college basketball history. His Carolina teams also won or shared a record seventeen ACC regular-season titles and won a record thirteen ACC tournament championships. Smith was head coach of the 1976 U.S. Olympic basketball team, which won the gold medal. A special panel assembled by ABC and ESPN named him one of the seven greatest coaches of the twentieth century in any sport. He is the author of The Carolina Way: Leadership Lessons from a Life in Coaching.
